Three Dimensional Computer Model

Navigation:- You can zoom in and out and spin the model around in all directions to get a better look

We commissioned a Computer Engineer Steve Littlejohn who specialises in creating 3D rendered computer models of historical buildings, to recreate the entire original Hospital building as it would have appeared the year it opened in 1932. We provided Steve with the original 1918 plans by architect George Thomas Hine and gave him access to the building to take measurements and collect reference photographs of the bricks and roof tiles etc.  So the brick and roof tile colour and texture you see on the computer model is in fact a photograph of the original building cleverly spread over the entire model.  We wanted the architectural detail to be accurate up to a single brick and include correct window layouts and roof structures.

About the Building

In the model you can see the 6 open sided pavilions that were originally provided for patients to sit and relax and shelter from the weather. These were all removed in the 1980’s as they had fallen into disrepair. We provided Steve with photographs of the originals Cefn Coed pavilions to build the model. Most of the Victorian Asylums in the UK had pavilions and some examples of these are can still be seen in Wales at Whitchurch Hospital in Whitchurch in Cardiff which are now listed buildings.

The model is a skin with a hollow interior which was then used by another computer engineer Wayne Samuel, Wayne converted this computer model into several separate printable 3D vector he later printed out which featured in the exhibition. These vectors are provided for you here free! to print out yourself. The tower is our favourite bit to print out! We would love to see photograph of any printout you do and we can put them on here!
