The 1959 Mental Health Act Repeals the 1890 and 1930 Lunacy and Mental Treatment Acts. This is the first legislative act to deinstitutionalise mental health patients by transferring care into the community. It provides a more robust legal framework for detaining patients and removes the last vestiges of moral categories of mental disease, e.g. ‘moral imbecile’.
